Taff Bowles

Karin Bowles

Karin Bowles

Welcome to "First Aid Training 4 Schools"! I have been an "ITC First" accredited first aid trainer for almost 20 years and delivered more than 150 first aid courses for schools to over 2000 teaching staff. I am a qualified  teacher who has worked in schools and outdoor education centres for over 40 years, and been a member of 3 mountain rescue teams.

From 2003 - 19 I worked full-time with schools as the LA "Educational Visits and Outdoor Learning Officer" for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council's "School Improvement team".

Karin (Taff's wife) provides vital back-up and admin support for our courses. Karin is not a qualified 1st Aid trainer but, as a mother of 3 grown-up children and an experienced Occupational Therapist in the NHS, Karin has had extensive experience, and has a sound knowledge and understanding of first aid.

Jo Joveini

Jo Joveini

We work closely in partnership with Jo Joveini who also runs her own successful first aid training company (ActFastFirst Aid) based in Swanland near Hull. Jo is also a qualified teacher and an "ITC First" accredited trainer who has run first aid training courses successfully for many years. If Taff is not available on your preferred dates, we are more than happy to recommend Jo as a replacement trainer who operates to the same high standards.

We also ask Jo to help if we need a second trainer for larger groups.

What makes us different?

Specially designed to meet the needs of schools

  • Our unique 1-day courses have been specially designed by experienced teachers to specifically meet the needs of schools.
  • The aim is to help school staff have the competence and confidence to deal with incidents in their real contexts, both indoors and outdoors (e.g. in the dining room, on the school playground/sports field, or on school visits).
  • 2-day Paediatric courses are also available for EYFS staff.
  • Courses are led by trainers who are qualified teachers (with experience of both primary and secondary school settings), and who have extensive knowledge and experience themselves of delivering first aid in real situations (in schools, on sports pitches, during offsite visits, and with mountain rescue teams).

Comprehensive and thorough

  • We cover a much wider range of topics than the statutory courses (e.g. Emergency First Aid at Work) and include vital issues (such as head injuries, sports injuries, anaphylaxis, panic attacks, fractures etc.) which are not included in many standard courses.
  • The aim is for all participants not just to gain a first aid certificate, but to leave the course feeling that they have the all-round competence and confidence to deal with any first aid scenario that they might be faced with at school (or indeed at home!)

Practical, interactive, and hands-on approach

  • An emphasis is placed on practicing and developing key practical skills, rather than just increasing theoretical knowledge.
  • Participants are actively involved and engaged throughout, with no wasted time just sitting around (for example, when practising CPR, we ensure that there is one Rescusi-Anne for every 2 participants – instead of one per 12 as is often the case!).
  • We encourage active participation and the continual practice and reinforcement of skills – this is much more enjoyable and effective than reading handouts or watching endless powerpoint presentations!

Enjoyable, memorable and non-pressured

  • In contrast to many courses, we positively encourage a relaxed, informal atmosphere, with hopefully lots of fun and laughter throughout!!
  • Fun, role-playing scenarios are used to help participants remember key first aid skills, and gain the confidence to deal with real situations.
  • We aim to provide all the extra support and assistance necessary to ensure that everyone succeeds, so that there is  no need to fear making mistakes or answering questions wrongly.
  • If organised as a whole school staff training, these courses can be a wonderful and effective way of bringing staff together, and building friendship, trust, and respect.

Quality instruction from experienced professionals

  • We are externally regulated by the Awarding Body "ITC First" to deliver a range of first aid training courses and qualifications, all of which are fully certified and valid for 3 years.
  • Over the past 15 years, we have delivered over 150 courses (to over 2000 school staff).
  • From the individual feedback provided, 100% have “strongly agreed” their experience was worthwhile, 100% have rated the quality of instruction as “High” and 100% stated that they would recommend the course to friends/colleagues.
  • Below are just 3 examples of typical feedback provided by satisfied customers:
  • "Super practical activities allowed greater retention. Delivered with enthusiasm, smiles, and laughter. A super course. Thank you" (Jonathan Smith, Kirk Ella Primary)
  • "This training was brilliant. The trainer was great, so enthusiastic and motivating. The information and demonstrations were easy to grasp" (Emma Oldfield, The Market Weighton School)
  •  “I requested that I would return to Taff Bowles as my refresher First Aid tutor because on personal past experience he is one of the best, most detailed, and relaxed deliverers of first aid training. I always recommend colleagues to Taff’s courses” (Matt Simpson, South Hunsley School)

Flexible, Adaptable, and Accessible

  • Our 7-hour courses are best delivered in one day, but they can be completed in 2 half days, or 3 twilight (after school) sessions if preferred, to suit your school’s needs.
  • We use your own school (usually the school hall, staffroom, or large classroom) as the venue. This reduces your costs and travel time, and ensures participants are familiar, and at ease with, their surroundings.

Local and Affordable

  • We deliver courses only to schools in the Yorkshire and Humberside region, and we are normally more than happy to drop in beforehand to meet you and discuss your training needs.
  • Our prices range from £35 per person (for a 1-day, 7 hour course) but prices depend upon the location and the number of participants (minimum 6). Why not arrange a course as a school cluster, and spread the cost?
  • There is normally a maximum of 12 participants per course. If numbers exceed 12, a second trainer will be required.
  • Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your training requirements, and we will be pleased to provide you with a competitive quote.
